This Code of practice details the fire safety standards for the design, installation, commissioning and maintenance of fire detection and fire alarm systems in non-domestic premises. It is essential reading for any professional involved in these processes.
The 2025 update supersedes BS 5839-1:2017. It includes several important changes, including:
Restructuring of clauses: Clause 4 is moved to the Introduction, and Clause 33 is merged with Clause 31.
New Section 7 added to address extensions and modifications.
Tighter control on variations: Certain deviations from recommendations are now explicitly prohibited in Clause 6 due to safety concerns following fatal fires.
Simplified siting recommendations for manual call points.
