About this course

This plumbing training course provides you with all the necessary skills in the design, installation, testing, commissioning and handover procedure of ventilation systems.

Who is this course for

This course is ideal for experienced electricians, plumbers, ventilation installers and heating engineers looking to improve their knowledge and understanding of domestic ventilation systems. 

The course meets the minimum technical competency requirement for installers looking to apply to join a Competent Person Scheme in England and Wales for domestic ventilation systems. It is also relevant for installers working Scotland and Northern Ireland. 

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for candidates enrolling on this course. However, an appreciation of the requirements for typical ventilation systems is an advantage.

What will you learn?

  • Fundamental working principles of ventilation systems. 
  • Minimum legal requirements. 
  • The types of ventilation systems, including intermittent extract fans, continuous mechanical extract systems and continuous mechanical extract systems with heat recovery. 
  • Brief introduction into other systems such as PIV, single room heat recovery. 
  • Why ventilation is important. 
  • The varying techniques used for installation of the different systems. 
  • The pitfalls associated with poor workmanship and misuse of ventilation systems. 
  • Basic system design. 
  • Preparation prior to installation. 
  • Competent Person Schemes. 
  • Commissioning of a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit. 
  • Inspection and testing. 
  • Certification and documentation of a mechanical ventilation heat recovery unit. 
  • Assessments. 

How is this course assessed?

This assessment for this course comprises of the following:

  • practical assessment
  • multiple-choice exam
  • scenario-based questions.

What do you need to have with you?

  • Photo ID will be required on the day of the examination; please note failure to provide this will result in the candidate not being able to sit the examination. 
  • Two recent passport size photographs. 
  • A calculator.
