About this course

This renewables course covers a wide range of subjects relating to heat pumps. It's designed to give you a full understanding of the theory and practical skills required to safely install them. You'll cover everything from their background to how to perform fault diagnosis and repair. 

Successful candidates will be able to use this award to meet the MCS competency requirements for the heat pump scheme

Who is this course for

This plumbing course is ideal for experienced plumbing and heating engineers looking to improve their knowledge and understanding of heat pumps with a view to apply to join an MCS Installer Scheme.

What are the entry requirements?

To attend this course you must hold the following.

  • N/SVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent. Examples include: pumping, heating & ventilation (domestic/nondomestic/commercial installation), oil fired technical services and gas installation & maintenance. 
  • Alternatively, heating installers with two years' minimum experience installing wet central heating systems, evidenced either by manufacturer course certification, Gas Safe Register, OFTEC, MCS or HETAS registration. 

In addition to the above, the following certification must be held by the learner or included as part of the training course package, assessed and certificated on successful attainment. 

  • Un-Vented Domestic Hot Water Storage Systems (UVHW). 
  • Water Regulations (WR).

What will you learn?

  • Fundamental working principles. 
  • Health and safety risks and safe systems of work. 
  • Purpose and operational characteristics of heat pump unit and system components.
  • Fundamental air source heat pump design considerations. 
  • Preparatory work required for heat pump installations. 
  • Planning, preparation, installation, testing, commissioning, and handover requirements for the installations of 'active' heat pumps.
  • Requirements for routine service and maintenance. 

How is this course assessed?

The assessment for this course comprises of the following:

  • multiple-choice exams
  • practical scenario based questions
  • practical assessment.

What do you need to have with you?

  • Copies of your existing qualification certificates. 
  • A recent passport sized photo. 
  • Safety boots & high viz jacket for practical training purposes. 
  • A calculator (not smart phone). 
  • Photo ID.
