About this course

Building on the previous PAT testing course, this covers both theoretical and practical electrical training and has been upgraded to cover a wider range of equipment.

This is an electrical course designed to give you the skills and knowledge required to inspect and test items of electrical equipment and document your results. Following completion, you can be newly confident that all your procedures are in line with the latest Code of Practice.

Course information

Who is this course for

In general, this electrical course is for anyone looking after the maintenance and testing of electrical equipment, but it will be particularly valuable if you're interested in taking your understanding in this area to an advanced level.

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements for undertaking this qualification. However, because of the complex nature of some of the equipment it's best that you have a relevant understanding of electrical systems.

What will you learn?

  • Electrical safety.
  • Equipment types and maintenance.
  • Process of in-service inspection and testing.
  • The electrical tests.
  • Documentation requirements.

How is this course assessed?

This City & Guilds qualification assessment includes the following.

1. One practical assignment.

  • Task A: Inspect and test an item of Class I equipment.
  • Task B: Inspect and test an item of Class II equipment.
  • Task C: Complete appropriate documentation.

2. One online multiple-choice test.

What do you need to have with you?

To get the best out of this training you should have access to each of the following for the duration of the course.

  • A copy of BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 - Requirements for Electrical Installations.
  • A copy of Amendment 3:2024 (download for free from the NICEIC website).
  • A copy of the Corrigendum (May 2023) to BS 7671:2018+A2:2022 (download for free from the IET website).
  • A scientific calculator with square root function.

Not having the above items for the duration of the training will compromise the quality of the learning and significantly reduce the chance of success in the open book assessment.

You'll need photo ID on the day of the examination; please note failure to provide this will result in you not being able to sit the exam.
