About this course

This clean energy course teaches you all of the technical knowledge and practical skills you need to maintain, repair, report and diagnose faults on solar photovoltaic systems. This prepares you for successfully offering a new service to customers with solar PV systems.

Course information

Who is this course for

It's recommended that you hold a Level 3 Award in the Installation of Small-Scale Photovoltaic Systems or a similar qualification before taking this course in renewables. 

Completion of this renewable energy course, in combination with the Level 3 Award in Photovoltaics, means you will have developed the tools to handle almost any job involving solar panel installation and maintenance. 

What are the entry requirements?

There are no formal entry requirements to enrol on this course. However, it is strongly recommended that you have completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship or, at a minimum, hold a qualification in inspection and testing, as well as the current edition of the wiring regulations.

What will you learn?

  • An overview of key safety considerations, legislation, and industry guidance. 
  • Safe isolation of multiple sources of supply. 
  • Solar PV system components. 
  • Solar PV system fault diagnosis and rectification. 
  • Periodic inspection and maintenance of solar PV systems. 

How is this course assessed?

Candidates are assessed using a combination of knowledge assessment methods and observation of practical application.

What do you need to have with you?

  • A copy of BS 7671 (latest edition). 
  • IET Code of Practice for Grid-connected Solar Photovoltaic Systems (latest edition). 
  • A scientific calculator. 
  • A device with internet access (such as a phone, tablet, or laptop).
  • Hand tools (optional).
